"What are they doing here?" The surf broke in white breaks every so often. The sun ambered and then streaked across the horizon in ball of light. "Whom, are you refering to when you say they, in that particular way. It's seems so rude". The first set of clouds turned a peculiar shade of grey as they churned in the sea breeze. The mist from the first set of clouds vaporized and reformed slightly ahead of it's first position. "Let me take a look."The first set of clouds streched higher and higher until it elevated itself well above the other clouds that had settled just midway between the blue flashing buoy. The sea shimmered into a thin line where the water seemed to gently kiss the sky line. A large mass of clouds formed on the border of that line and formed a wall, preventing the eye from peering even with a looking glass. Well preventing anybody but the Seagulls the Pigeons and of course the Ravens.

"H-m-m-m all I see are the birds. The Seagulls were nestled in their respective nests'. They had taken their extremely webbed feet and made smooth oblong impressions in the warm sand which hugged the countours of their feathered bodies in exacting detail!

"Yes, yes said Cumulis there they are indeed. Who's that rather odd person with the strange hat on?" The sea breezes became intrested in the conversation that the clouds were having. It was quite a pow wow after a while. The moisture in the air trippled as more and more of them gathered. They almost chatted up a storm as some of them dipped hazily close to the surface of the Ocean. A light smattering of rain pelted down upon the nesting birds and the man with the decidedly obtuse stove pipe hat on his head. The Seagulls took their turns gliding inches above the surface of the water. Two rather brown Pelicans flew high into the coversation that the clouds were having to see what was going on. "Ah, ease dropping.  Quite a rude a thing you can be answered the secound vapor. "I don' t think the clouds want to talk to you today; said the secound Pelican. " "Where are fish? Where are they and what's the big meeting about." "Well , the direct approach. And what about you?; questioned a large mass of cloud vapor.

"Not to be rude, but all Pelicans are not alike. We may look the same to you, however we are two different birds entirely. The secound Pelican opened his wings and glided inches above the Ocean surface, never once flapping his wings. He continued to scrutinize the surface. "O. I. C. You'll have to speak to me about the fish;stated a large plum of cloud vapor tinged with grey with blushes of chartruse. The first Pelican flew straight up and disapeared high in the ceiling of the sky. Suddenly a streak of brown could be seen flashing down into the Ocean. A bright spark of sea foam ignited the surface as the Pelican contined to dive underneath the  water. The first Seagull continued to glide. "Flapping your wings is a distinct waste of energy. The gulls hovered in mid air, darting their heads from side to side. Their eyes bore a soft almost warm quality as they were surrounded by white feathers and highlighted with streaks of faint copper. Their bodies bore a soft pastel grey with highlights of black pinstripe.

They grew in mass and intensity each gull spreading their feathers in just the right direction so that they could hover in a stationary position. When the group reached its full potential they cried out to each-other in soft yet distinct shrills.

"What are you?" Yes, Yes tell us who and what are you?"The questions continued to mount and the  man sitting on the beach upon closer inspection was not a figure of a human being. No. True from a distance it did seem as though it was in fact a man with a stove pipe hat. Sand is all it was. The closer the gulls hovered over the figure the clearer it became that it was nothing more than a mound of sand piled high enough to be seen from a distance. "It's sand called the first set of gulls."All of birds descended and began to settle themselves into niches in the sand.  "Are you really sand?" Yeah , you looked just like a man with a stove pipe hat on a few minutes ago!" "You've got to be a man, tell us the truth, were in the mood to talk to you if you got food!" "Yes, yes food; food ,food. "Here, here it's an excellant suggestion." "We'll wait it's no trouble."
The sand pile  shifted in the sea breeze and scattered against the beach.  The birds backed up at first flapping their wings as if they might take to the air at a moments notice.

The upon further consideration refolded their wings against their bodies and pecked at the spot where the sand column once stood.

A man and woman walked along the beach arm in arm. Thier two small children ran slightly ahead of them giggling and playing tag with each-other. "What's the first thing we should do if we move close to the Ocean- buy a boat?" "It's a possiablity but we've got to worry about these kids." "Buy a boat Mommy; requested the little girl she looked deep into her mother's eye's. The secound little girl ran up behind her laughing in a deep way and then in a higher pitch until she tagged her on the back. "You've got the coodies!" The first little girl fell foward and then caught her balance laughing and running after the secound girl. They ran and ran untill they reached the  Seagulls.

"Look honey the girls are watching the Seagulls let's just stand here and watch them. The couple embraced each-other and then kissed. As soon as the two little girls arrived they began to talk excitedly."What are beach angels?" one girl asked the other.  "I don't know. A school of porposies swam by the two girls and then stopped swimming in oval arcs back and forth in front of the two girls and the feeding gulls. The gulls continued to pick at the sand.

The couple walked up to the two little girls and all the Gulls took to the air and flew out of sight leaving the couple and the two girls standing alone. The porposies remained for a moment and then began to glide silently out across the diameter of the beach. Every once in a while they arced their smoothly formed bodies out and then back into the water. Finally they disappeared from sight underneath the chop of the ocean. "Oh, mommies sorry for scarring away the Seagulls. The woman hugged both little girls and wrapped a sweater around them both. " Mommy, mommy what are beach angels. Yeah, they were here and we talked to them!" The man looked at the two little girls and knelt down on one of his knee's. "Did you see the porposes." "Yeah chimmed both the little girls; the beach Angels called them over while you were gone to help us. "Yeah, the Beach Angels didn't want us to go into the water!"
The woman looked at her husband. Honey did you see the life guard, it was such a short distance we really weren't that far behind you girls." Yes, you know mommy wouldn't let you go in the water we didn't want to scare the birds away. "Did you make freinds with the life guard is that his name Beach Angel?"

"No - there was no life guard mommy they were Beach - Angels. that's what they told us and they didn't want us to drown in the Ocean so they called the dolphins.  "Well I think it's ok they probably just made up some imaginary freinds while we were .... the man gave the woman a peck on the check. "Who's hungry?" Me-e-e-e-e; Me too the couple laughed and began to walk away from the beach when the woman noticed something and turned around. "look at this the girls must have made these impressions in the sand while we were kissing. "Let me see." The sand mystically had impressions of winged angels. I remember lying on my back and making snow angels when I was younger said the man but I swear your kisses must be filled with a magic potient or something I didn't see either one of the girls sit down on the beach they were both standing when we walked up. "I'm not going to let them out of our sight again. Kissing or no kissing.

The woman turned to  the two girls and checked and rechecked their hair. "What's the fuss about hon we can worry about their hair when we get to the Inn it's a beach relax it's not a fashion fair. The woman continued to check both girls and then looked slightly perplexed grasping both girls firmly by the each hand. "Mommies going to never let you out of her sight again either one of you do't you worry about that. When did you make the little angels in the sand. "That's what they've been talking about isn't did you do that or did the lifeguard that we didn't see make them? "They were probably just there left by some other people before the kids walked up.

"The Beach Angels were standing there and then they  went away when you walked up.I told you- they ... "They wanted to call thedolphins to make sure you didn't drown; interejected the mother. Way more careful is what I'm going to be from now on do you hear me , mommy loves both of you very much, I'll never ever leave you alone again, not even to kiss daddy.

The woman clutched both little girls in her arms and carried them walking slightly ahead of the man.

NIGHTMARES

LIFE GUARD

The long ribbon of beach could be seen for 400 miles on a clear day. Once a booming resort and hideway for the rich now was closed because of industrial waste and pollution.
A once thriving community comprised of doctors, executives, yuppies, and the recently rich, was now a desolote reminder that even a beach can die!
Where there were once thousands of flapping gulls floating along the air currents and dancing against the surf, now was a bone filled grave yard grimly scattered with natter, trash, strings, and sharp pieces of glass.
The broken glass glinted against the decending sun. Moments of daylight remained as the sea churned against the oily beach front. A tanker had lost a huge cargo. It wiped out all the marine life, not a fish had been spotted in over 20 years!

Life Guard station 21 rattled and banged against the wind. The ramp leading up to the entrance was tattered and there was broken glass and bottle caps around each of its pedistals.
In it's day it had housed some of the finest and bravest men and women in the county. The last injury closed the beach finally. A small child was running along the beach bare footed when a sharp piece of glass erupted up from the dirty beach and punctured her foot. The loss of blood and the shock from infection caused the loss of the leg and the child almost died there in the litter strewn sands.
The outrage of the citizens closed the beach and the community slowly died within the twenty years. Now it was just a barren ghost town. Tattered buildings in sore need of repair, shutters that swung and clanged against the side of the building when the srong sea breezes would blow.
Old newspapers and paper cups rolled like tumble weed across the beach.
Nobody ever came there anymore. The health hazard signs were posted every 20 feet.
WARNING POLLUTION NO SWIMMING!DANGER HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ON BEACH. Still the lifeless beach created a secound home for
Vincent.
Vincent was a wind chapped bedraggled alcoholic. He dressed in the rements of garments once used and then discarded. His tattered appearence made him blend against the trash strewn beach, he moved like a chameleon against a tapastry of broken glass bottles. The wind pushed Vincent, his steps measured against the grade of the sands. Each step brought him closer to Life Guard Station 21.
Like an oasis in a barren desert the banging of the open door could be heard.
Vincent stumbled against the ramp catching his foot against a buried piece of trash and fell against the rotting board of the ramp.
Vincent squinted as if there was somebody staring at him from the darkened doorway of the lifeguard station. There was no one there. The creaking of the door was followed by another loud bang. The cold winds dropped the temperature again as the damp air settled into Vincent's bones.
He turned the cap on the bottle that he produced from his tattered coat pocket and went up to the top landing of the guard station.
The faded numbers 21 could be seen as the light from the sun faded into the ocean.
The floorings of the old station creaked as Vincent made his way towards the open door way. He caught the banging door with his hand and peered into the darkened guard station.
A sudden gust of wind slammed against the the old door of station 21. Just for a secound Vincent thought someone had pushed him as the door and he were propelled forward into the open cabin. A wet clammy feeling against Vincent's shoulder gave him a quick push and he was inside the darkened cabin. The old creaking door slammed loudly behind him!

Delerium Tremons

The sound of the door banging shut startled the man as he felt his way around in the darkened room. The smell of bile immediately reached his nostrils as the sting of a splintered piece of wood grazed his forearm.

He repositioned his grip on the neck of the bottle, closed his eyes and took a long drink. As he opened his eyes he felt the distinct presence of someone or something in the lifeguard chamber with him!

His eyes searched frantically in the dark for the unseen spector, however there was nothing but the howling wind raging against the wooden walls, banging against the door!

He stood there in the darkness, the burn of the alcohol against the back of his throat tightened his jaws, his head felt light, his legs unsure. With the wind raging against the shack it felt like a safe bet to lean or sit against the wall for just a moment and collect his thoughts.

Again a wave of nausea hit him in the pit of his stomach, bending him forward. The banging on the door became more insistent, more urgent. It continued to haunt him as it echoed throughout the lifeguard chamber.

Just outside the Lifeguard Station 21 the sands flurried and whipped together until they formed the shape of a figure. The figure walked into the ocean and the sea rose to met it. The litter and trash was astounding. Even cans washed up against the lifeless beach. A bone yard. Desolate. The figure continue to wade through the Ocean picking up pieces of broken glass and aluminum cans, strings, and plastic covers, styrofoam, bottle caps. On and on deeper and deeper into the Ocean it waded until it became heavy and laden with garbage, it turned and faced the Lifeguard Station piercing the night air with a loud high pictched sream and sank into the depths of the murkey sea!

The beach trembled and then shifted. It was as if the entire beach was somehow lain on plates that shifted from side to side. Each shift created a place for some garbage or refuse to poke it's head through the sands. Each piece of trash became a headstone of garbage in a sandy cemetary!

Finally a rusty piece of metal began to move its way upward toward the surface of the beach. The length of it's body shot forward until two round eyes broke the sandy surface. A license plate shot forward and the rear axle of an automobile were clearly visable. The words SKY CHIEF were visable written in script against the rust pitted body!

The air filled with the stench of vomit and the beach avulsed itself as objects, tires, pieces of rusted metal and other forms of trash and debrie flew into the night air and landed in small explosions against the sandy beach!
